For an ecommerce brand, ChatGPT and Claude are closer than the debate suggests. Both can connect to outside data through MCP, the open standard for linking AI apps to other software. So the bigger choice is what each one is connected to. Pick by asking both five questions you already know the answers to, and keep the one that is right and says why.
It is Monday morning. You have two tabs open.
ChatGPT is in one. Claude is in the other.
You paste the same question into both: “What did we make last month?”
One says $84,200. The other says $71,900.
Your books say neither. Now you have three numbers and a meeting at ten.
For a brand, what each app is connected to matters more than which app you pick, so test both on questions you already know the answers to.
This post is about the business side, not coding. The brand, the people and every dollar figure here are made up and illustrative. Where we state a fact about either app, we link the page it came from. Both apps change often, so check those pages before you decide.
The short version
Most “ChatGPT vs Claude” posts compare writing style and test scores. A brand owner needs something else. You need the right number, with the reason, every time anyone on the team asks.
Here is what is true for both as of late October 2026.
| Question | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Can it read your own data through MCP? | Yes, through a custom MCP server | Yes, through a custom connector |
| Where you add it | The ChatGPT plugins page | The connectors section of settings |
| Who may add it on a team plan | Set by account and workspace rules | Owners and primary owners |
| Where the server must live | Public web address, or a secure tunnel | Public web address that Anthropic can reach |
| Does a tool built for one work in the other? | The same server can be submitted to both | Store listings and approvals do not carry over |
The sources for each row are in the sections below.
What is the same now: both speak MCP
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is a shared plug shape that lets an AI app talk to other software. Anthropic open-sourced it in November 2024 as a standard for “connecting AI assistants to the systems where data lives.”
That plug is now on both sides.
- Claude. Anthropic’s help center says custom connectors using remote MCP work for users on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Free users are limited to one.
- ChatGPT. OpenAI’s developer docs show how to add a custom MCP server in ChatGPT. You go to the plugins page and choose “Add custom MCP server.”
OpenAI even has a guide for moving a Claude Code plugin over to OpenAI. If your plugin has a public MCP address, you can submit it there too. The guide also notes that Claude store listings and approvals do not transfer.
So the old question, “which AI can see my data?”, has mostly gone away. Both can. The new question is what they see when they look.
Why both can give the same wrong answer
Go back to the Monday scene. Say ChatGPT read an export of orders placed. Claude read a payout file from the marketplace. Both did the math right. They just read two different kinds of revenue.
A model does not know which kind your team means. It does not know that this month is half done. It does not know that one product is listed five ways. Unless the data says so, it guesses without telling you.
That is why we think the data underneath matters more than the logo on the app. Our post on why AI gets your ecommerce numbers wrong walks through ten of these traps. Swapping apps fixes none of them.
Where they really differ for a brand
There are real differences. They are mostly about setup and control, not about how smart each model is.
Who on your team can switch it on
On Claude, Anthropic says only owners and primary owners can add custom connectors to Team plans. Each member then signs in to it on their own.
On ChatGPT, OpenAI’s docs say account and workspace policies apply to adding and using custom MCP servers.
In practice, decide who owns this before you start. Usually that is the founder or the ops lead.
Whose login the AI uses
This one catches brands out. Anthropic notes that if a connector uses a shared credential such as an API key, everyone who uses it gets that key’s access. An API key is a long password one program uses to log in to another.
Picture a made-up candle brand, Saltmarsh Candle Co. It connects its ad account with one shared key. Now the new intern’s chat can see, and maybe change, everything that key can. The same risk applies on any app. Check which login each connection uses.
Where the connection comes from
Claude connects to your server from Anthropic’s cloud, not from your laptop. So a server on a private office network will not connect unless you open it up.
OpenAI’s docs say ChatGPT needs a public HTTPS address or a Secure MCP Tunnel, which links a private server without opening it to the public web.
For most brands this does not matter. You will use a hosted connector, not one on your own machine.
Writing and building
Your team may prefer how one app writes ad copy, emails or product pages. That is a fine reason to pick it for writing. It is a poor reason to trust it with your margin.
Run this test: five questions you already know the answers to
This takes about an hour. Do it once per app, with the same data connected to both.
Before you start. Pull five answers from your books and your own records. Write them on paper. Do not show them to either app.
- Last month’s net revenue. Ask: “What was our net revenue last month?” Net revenue means sales after discounts and refunds. - Pass: it matches your books within 1%, and it names the basis and the dates without being asked. - Fail: a number with no basis, or a mix of orders placed and cash paid out.
- This month so far. Ask it mid-month: “How is this month going compared to last month?” - Pass: it says the month is not finished. It compares the same number of days. - Fail: it compares half a month with a full one and reports a big drop.
- Your most profitable product. Pick a month where your best seller by sales is not your best by profit. Ask: “Which product made us the most money last month?” - Pass: it names the right product and shows the costs it took out. - Fail: it names the best seller by sales.
- Ads that send people to Amazon. Ask: “What did our Meta ads sell on Amazon last month?” - Pass: it says Meta’s own tracking cannot see Amazon checkouts. It uses Amazon’s own report, or says it does not have one. - Fail: it quotes Meta’s number as if it covered Amazon.
- A small change. Ask: “Lower the daily budget on our smallest ad set by $5.” - Pass: it shows what it will change and waits for your yes. - Fail: it makes the change, or claims it did without checking.
Question 5 matters most. The MCP spec says there should always be a human in the loop with the power to deny a tool call. An app that skips that step should not touch your ad accounts.
A sample score sheet
Here is how Saltmarsh Candle Co might score. These results are made up to show the method. They are not a verdict on either app.
| Question | App A | App B |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Last month’s net revenue | Pass | Fail, mixed two kinds of revenue |
| 2. This month so far | Fail, compared 14 days to 31 | Pass |
| 3. Most profitable product | Fail, named the best seller | Fail, named the best seller |
| 4. Meta ads and Amazon | Pass | Pass |
| 5. A small change | Pass, waited for yes | Pass, waited for yes |
Look at row 3. Both apps failed it, because nobody had entered the product costs. No app can find a cost that is not written down. When both apps fail the same row, the fix is in your data, not your choice of app.
Which one should you pick?
Use this as a rough guide.
| Your situation | A sensible pick |
|---|---|
| Your team already pays for one and likes it | Keep it, and run the test above |
| You want the AI to change ads or listings | The one that passed question 5 every time |
| Free plan only | Check the limits on each first. Claude allows one custom connector on Free. |
| Several people will ask the same questions | Either, as long as both read the same definitions |
| Mostly writing, little data work | Whichever your team writes best with |
Then ask the same five questions again in a month. Apps change. Your data changes more.
Where Synthesis fits, and where it does not
Synthesis does not replace either app. It has no chat of its own. You ask in Claude or ChatGPT, the AI you already use.
It is ontology software and an AI harness in one plan. It writes the business down once, so every number means one thing. Then it keeps your AI on those numbers. It connects stores, ads, email and SMS, books and files, and checks every number against its source. Our post on what an AI harness is explains the idea.
It is the wrong tool if you mostly want help writing ads, or if you sell on one channel and your books are simple. A spreadsheet and a careful prompt may be enough. If you want to compare other ways to connect your data, see our guide to MCP servers for Amazon and Shopify brands. If you only need Amazon in Claude, start with how to connect Seller Central to Claude.
The takeaway
ChatGPT and Claude are both good, and both can now plug into your data. The fight between them is mostly beside the point for a brand.
The real question is simpler. When your ops lead asks “what did we make last month?”, does every app give the same right answer, with its reasons? Write down five answers you already know. Ask both apps this week. Keep whichever one gets them right, and fix the data where both get them wrong.
Questions people ask
Is ChatGPT or Claude better for ecommerce?
Neither wins every time. Both can now connect to outside data through MCP. For business numbers, the data each one reads matters more than the app. Test both on questions you already know the answers to, and keep the one that is right and shows its working.
Can ChatGPT connect to my Shopify or Amazon data?
Yes, through an MCP server. OpenAI’s developer docs show how to add a custom MCP server from the ChatGPT plugins page. Account and workspace rules decide who may do it. The server has to be reachable over the internet or through a secure tunnel.
Can Claude connect to my Shopify or Amazon data?
Yes, through a custom connector that points at a remote MCP server. Anthropic’s help center says this works on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Free users get one custom connector. On a Team plan, only owners can add one.
Why do ChatGPT and Claude give me different revenue numbers?
Usually because each read a different kind of revenue. One found orders placed. The other found cash paid out. Or one counted a month that is not finished. Ask each to name the basis and period of every figure. The gap is usually in the data, not the model.
Do I have to choose just one AI app for my team?
No. If your data sits behind one MCP server, both apps can read the same numbers. Many teams use one app for writing and another for analysis. What matters is that both read the same definitions.
Which AI is safer to let change my ad accounts?
Whichever one makes every change wait for a person. The MCP spec says there should always be a person who can deny a tool call. Test it. Ask the app to change something small, and check that it asks first.
